So, open a new document in Photoshop by clicking the New File button at the start page or heading to File > New. For example, let’s say I’m trying to print a 24×18-inch image after the printers trimmed the bleed. To specify your canvas, you’ll need to know what size you want the printed image. Naturally, canvas size is essential when setting your bleed. Choosing Your Canvas Size & Adding Bleed In Photoshop Adding bleed could help prevent your images from being cropped unnecessarily in these situations, but is often not 100% required with many run-of-the-mill printing services today. Instead, your image is automatically cropped to fit the paper or canvas to your desired print size. With that said, it is worth noting that many online and local printing shops do not require bleed for printing. The right amount of bleed will allow your image to fit the page as best as possible while maintaining the correct image size and quality and also preventing random cropping once you’ve printed your image. Therefore, adding bleed is essential to define how your photo will look after printing. If you don’t specify the bleed around an image, you will ultimately have less control over how your picture ends up once printed. It is the white space around the photo once it’s on paper.īleed is essential when printing images as most printers won’t be able to print to the edge of the page - and even if they could, this is risky as you could lose part of your image if it doesn’t fit the paper perfectly or if the printer prints the image slightly skewed. What Is Bleed For?īleed is the area around an image meant to be cut off after the file is printed. Let’s take a closer look at the different ways to add bleed and crop marks in the program. Otherwise, you may have some surprises once your images are put on paper. However, crop marks and bleed are useful to add before an image file is saved and sent to print. You won’t have to worry about these for sharing or digital purposes. For example, changing an 8×10 canvas to 9×11 would add a 0.5″ bleed around the entire image. Now set your unit of measurement to Inches, and adjust the dimensions to add your bleed. To easily add bleed to an image in Photoshop, first, open your photo into the program, then go to Image > Canvas Size. Adding bleed and crop marks in Photoshop is a surprisingly quick process. Similarly, crop marks (also known as stroke marks) are the areas around an image that help show the printers where to trim. A lot less gruesome than it sounds, bleed is the area outside of a printed image that is left empty so that it can be trimmed off after printing. Very important: When exporting your pdf-file (print), make sure to check 'Visible Guides and Grids'.If you’ve dealt with printing images before, you might be familiar with bleed. The baseline grid will be shown by default when horizontal 'Value' is checked which means you will get the complete document grid. ![]() So enter 70 lines in the field called 'Type Area' which is found in following location: Margins, Columns and Rows > Custom Setup > Horiziontal. For example in A4 document (210 x 297 mm) with 12 pt leading it is 70 lines. Once you have taken note of that value check 'Value' for horizontal margins (in Margins section, no need to enter any value, margins can be set to 0 otherwise it will not set the guides from edge to edge of the document) and enter that value. lines shown in the 2 fields above the 3 dropdowns). Here's an example what you can do: Enter your desired leading and then if you hold down the Shift button you will see how many document lines the grid consists of (no. To export the document grid it has to be simulated because only guides and grids can be exported. This will create guides to be included when exporting PDF-file. To include subleading/subbaseline-lines you must after having checked vertical or horizontal 'Value' option go to the Custom Setup section and then in the Type Area section edit desired subleading-lines. ![]() In this case it is recommended that you take note of the margins and then re-apply them in with 'Value' checked and the end result will be the same. 'Value' option is only available when working in Quick mode.Įven if you wish to "follow the grid" you must still use the 'Value' option to properly include the entire grid. Please note that the document grid can not be exported in the PDF-file however, when selecting the vertical 'Value' option the horizontal document grid is simulated with guides and enables you to export the grid.In order to export your grid properly you must check 'Value' in margins.
